‘vegyeskereskedés’ is an Open Studios project by TheoStudio, launching for the first time on March 14, 2025. The space will host a monthly event and open our studio to the public, inviting discussions on political and social issues, freedom of speech, Hungarian autocracy and Józsefváros aesthetics – all in the spirit of community, sharing food and lamenting about grocery prices.
Alongside these conversations, you will encounter artistic practices of Taras Tolstikov, William Theodoracopulos, and other invited artists from Józsefváros’ local underground creative community in Budapest.
The word ‘vegyeskereskedés’ is an old-fashioned Hungarian term for a “general store” or “mixed goods shop”, traditionally referring to a small shop selling a variety of items.
With this project, we aim to revive Budapest’s artistic and queer community engaged with political struggles, support local craft, encourage to exchange ideas, and continue creating despite the growing inequalities in the world.
With our first exhibition ‘PIECE PEACE PEAS pisssssssssss’, we invite you to engage in emergency conversations about the so-called “peace agreement” negotiations between Ukraine and Russia, mediated by Trump. Our space will be the place to reflect on politics, war in Ukraine, Hungarian authoritarian rule and prices on eggs.
