“Freedom is never granted; it is won.” – A. Philip Randolph
On March 14, we celebrate one year of vegyeskereskedés – a year of continuous creation, experiments, ideas, and building community.Standing so close to March 15, the day of the Hungarian Revolution, it felt natural to dedicate this gathering to the spirit of revolution.
Revolutionary events may resemble a volcano in their very nature. Susan Sontag in her book Volcano Lover describes the mountain as an emblem of catastrophic forces – recalling the deluge or a great conflagration – yet at the same time as a symbol of survival and human persistence. In this sense, nature’s violence does not only destroy; it also produces culture and artifacts, preserving history by petrifying it and simultaneously shaping a new landscape for what is yet to come.
For this special gathering we invited artists from Hungary (Barbara Mihályi), Ukraine (Andrii Nekraha), and Iran (Mina) to spend the day creating together and sharing their work and thoughts with the community.

We are Vegyeskereskedés, an experimental art collective originated in Józsefváros. Through the concept of a “universal store,” we explore everyday community life and create an open space for dialogue, addressing social and political issues in Budapest and Hungarian-Ukrainian relations.
