Svitanok / Sunrise Altarino
Svitanok is an assemblage of three paintings which form an altarino installation.
On the right side is a hommage to the icon Vyshhorodska Mother of God, a Byzantine icon originally gifted to Rus’ and found its home in the city of Vyshhorod. However, in 1169, the Grand Prince of Vladimir-Suzdal stole the icon and took it to Vladimir, then sent his army to destroy Kyiv, the capital of Rus’.
On the left is a hommage to the icon Kholmska Bohorodytsya (Icon of the Mother of God of Kholm), X century. Art historians consider this piece as a first icon of its kind made by Ukrainian artists of Rus’.
The painting in the middle on top features a morning sky gradient. It mounted in the icon corner, the sacred place for icon in the homes of Eastern Orthodox. In the beginning of the XX century Malevich, Ukrainian artist, placed his black square in the sacred corner to emphasize a significant shift in art. Today this shift is happening in Ukrainian society or even in whole Europe. Ukrainian people are fighting against darkness which came from Evil Empire to take our rights, free speech and democracy.
These three paintings create the icon corner composition and form the Sunrise altar.
